Wasn't it just a storybook over which I had fallen adoze and adream? In the summer of 1917, Frances Griffiths then ten years old and her cousin Elsie Wright then sixteen years old were living with Elsie's parents in the town of Cottingley in West Yorkshire. The photographs became public in 1919 not during World War I, as depicted in the film , when Elsie's mother gave the photos to Edward Gardner, President of the Theosophical Society of Bradford. But as my little conductress, with her hair of gold and her frock of blue, danced before me round corners and pattered down passages, I had the view of a castle of romance inhabited by a rosy sprite, such a place as would somehow, for diversion of the young idea, take all color out of storybooks and fairytales.
